visual diaries from a roadtrip across America

summer of 2016: I moved out of my Manhattan apartment and went on a cross-country road trip. This project started the first night on the road: it was rainy and dark, and we were staying in a Motel 6 off the side of the highway. I was lying in bed in this strange, nowhere land, caught in moment between the familiar and the unknown. Drawing was a way to deal with everything I felt.

I just started sketching what I saw and how I felt... moments that felt poignant to me. Everything seems poignant when you're experiencing it for the first time. Over time, it became a methodical act of documentation; once I started drawing, I couldn't stop. I completed most of these in the car, en route to and from places, using watercolor pencil and ink.
